Results are mixed with regards to the success of Record Store Day 2009, the day dedicated to inject some much needed life into the local mom and pop music shop. Some sites have the gains posted as low as 1% overall, others have it as up 22% over the previous year. Vinyl was definitely a big seller, jumping 222% according to the indie store alliance. The day seemed to be a big hit at Coachella, and with more press could definitely catch on.
Here’s a quick video of Billy Corgan doing a little shopping, even if he was oblivious to the appropriateness of the day.

Billy Corgan stopped by an indie record store (Vintage Vinyl, Evanston) yesterday to do a little shopping on Record Store Day (we think it’s kinda interesting that he didn’t even know it was Record Store Day—just a regular part of his routine to do a little vinyl shopping on a Saturday). Now, back when the Smashing Pumpkins put out their last album, indie record stores were left out of all the “special”pieces that were given to non-music retailers (the ones shaped like big boxes) and believe me, we were hurt, and pissed off. You would be too if one of your favorite bands pretty much ignored you and left you with something “less than” what someone else was stocking next to the refrigerators. But indie record stores thrive and survive, it’s what we do. We still dig the music, Billy. And now we’re feeling pretty hopeful that we won’t be in that position again when a new record comes from one of the bands we helped introduce to our customers (you guys!). Check out what Billy had to say to a store clerk who bumped into him yesterday.
I’m not sure what he means by vinyl being “closer to the original recording that the artists make” and digital recordings being in some way inaccurate; deficient, maybe, but I don’t know about inaccurate. I’ll give you warmth, vibe, mojo, punch, any of those hot words you want, but “more accurate” is a stretch with regards to vinyl vs. digital for me. If you think I’m off point, or perhaps am misunderstanding what he means, hit me up in a comment.

weird. i expected him to talk smarter. choice of 'inaccurate'… but i suppose, he was sort of cornered. he warmed up good, but he had that awkward sway/looking thing happening.
