Christian Marclay – The Original Turntablist

Before Hip-Hop completely repossessed the turntable in the latter quarter of the 20th century, Christian Marclay was discovering new ways to incorporate vinyl in new genres of music. More interested in the unintentional sounds hidden in the vinyl, Marclay endeavored to unearth the potential of every object for a visual and musical experience. While everybody else was trying to get the cleanest sound possible from a scratchy record, Marclay was trying to induce as many pops and scratches from clean records as possible.

By cutting vinyl albums into pieces like a pie, and gluing them together into new patterns, Marclay was the first to experiment with what we’ve now come to know as the “mashup.”
