Jack White Starts Yet Another Band

Maybe we should stop calling these side projects by now.

After success with The White Stripes and The Raconteurs, Jack White has ventured out to start another supergroup, and he’s not retiring the “the”. The Dead Weather, is comprised of Jack White, who will take a turn on drums, Alison Mosshart from The Kills on lead vox, Dean Fertita of Queens of the Stone Age on guitar, and Jack Lawrence from The Greenhornes on bass. There has got to be something special about this guy that so many respected musicians would want to partner with him, and beyond that, every band he seems to start up hits it pretty big.

The Dead Weather’s album, Horehound, will be released this upcoming June, and you can download a few of their tracks here.

Love Jack White! The White Stripes is not normally my kind of music, but it grew on me after listening to it non-stop on a road trip with a friend.

Plus, he produced one of my favorite singers, Loretta Lynn (yup, it’s true, I’m a Loretta fan).

Plus, he had a small role in one of my favorite movies, "Cold Mountain" (Walter Murch is a freakin’ editing machine!).

I almost wrote about his Loretta Lynn contributions in the article, but figured that if I listed all of his accomplishments, the article would read more like a wikipedia entry than a commentary. ;)

I never got into The White Stripes, or The Raconteurs for some reason. I’ve heard the two The Dead Weather tracks though, and they show some promise as to winning me over. All that leads me to believe that maybe it was just White’s voice that I didn’t dig.

Regardless of if you love him or hate him, you have to acknowledge the fact that he’s musically significant. He was ranked 17th in Rolling Stone’s "best guitarists" article or something. All that wouldn’t mean a thing if it weren’t for the fact that every project he gets his hands on seems to blow up nowadays. I’m sure it doesn’t hurt that he stacks his bands with proven musicians though either.

He’s a renaissance man for sure.
