Cakewalk has posted a free 30 day trial of Sonar 8. It is fully functional and includes several plug-in bundles to get you going. The trial is of both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Sonar 8 Producer Edition, and will work on both Windows XP and Windows Vista. If you’re on a Mac, you could give it a shot with BootCamp or some equivalent to take advantage of the free trial.
This is a great way to gain some hands on experience with a solid DAW. I have heard a lot of people underestimate Sonar because it’s made by Cakewalk. My first computer-based recording system was with Sonar 3, and it’s a very intuitive DAW that’s great for starters and advanced users alike.
I really like this move by Cakewalk, as it’s tough to know what DAW suits you best without actually getting to try it out. You can read all the articles and reviews you want, and even watch some video on various software, but until you get in the studio and try to use it for yourself, you can’t know if it’s going to be what you want it to be. Now that Roland has the majority share in Cakewalk, we might start to see people take the company a bit more seriously as a legitimate contender for DAW market share. This trial could also help garner some more support for the program, as more people actually give it a fair shot.
