New Justice Track – “Civilization”

We’ve all been wanting a little more Justice ever since “Cross” blew up our speakers in 2007. Now we have a sneak peak on SoundCloud. It doesn’t quite possess the pumping, smashed, compressed aggression we know and love; and the added vocal presence brings the track a little more “pop-friendly” edge, but it’s still dirty, it’s still French, and I still love it.

Zac Farro Quits Paramore To Make Music

I kid, I kid; I’m not a hater. Seriously though, Zac and brother Josh Farro really did leave the chart-busting Paramore last week. You can hear a clip of Zac’s new band, Tunnel, below. Tunnel is a duo comprised of Zac Farro and Jason Clark. It has tinges of Coldplay-esque vocals and the melancholy electronic dirge of some Paper Route tracks. None of that should be surprising, as Paramore and Paper Route toured together for some time, developing relationships on the road.

Check out “Hide Your Eyes” here, and let me know what you think. I’m digging it. I’d pay for it, which is more than what I could say for all but a few of Paramore’s tunes.

I’ve been waiting for this EP for close to 2 years, and it’s solid. Versant’s 4-track debut is what I wanted Shiny Toy Guns’ sophomore followup to We Are Pilots to bring. Great progressions, strong dynamics and hooky melodies will invade your head for hours after listening. Prog-rock meets raw emotion in an album that makes it ever so clear why Versant took their time polishing this release.

If you’re into ABBA, Muse, the good version of STG or dare I say… some of the production elements of Katy Perry’s new album… give this a go.

Oh Land – New EP Out Now

If you follow my twitter/blip.fm you’ve probably seen me talk about Oh Land a smidge before. Nanna’s new EP has been out for about a month now, and it’s pretty tasty. The new tracks are quite a bit lighter and more bubbly than I would have expected based on the darker and more aggressive sound of Fauna, but each is just as pleasing. Stacked vocal harmonies and clean production create a very unique and dynamic piece that leaves the listener wishing the album wasn’t so short.

I like to go to the record store. My local shop happens to be M-Theory, and every other trip or so I’ll just ask Rick what’s good, and then give it a go. That’s how I found Beach House, Charlotte Gainsbourg, and more recently, Phantogram.

I’ve been squatting on this pick for a few months, since I felt like I was bombarding you guys with pick after pick without putting up much other content. I just caught this New York duo when they were in town last week with The Antlers. It was a great show and I would definitely try to catch them live if they’re coming near your town.

I know I’m late to the party on Trent Reznor’s new project with wife, Mariqueen Maandig. Pitchfork just posted a full song that you can listen to. If you want to see a couple videos from the studio, mostly short clips to generate some JJ Abrams style hype, check out their site.

All in all, I really dig it. It’s almost like the chill instrumental side of NIN meets Massive Attack.

Air is a French duo that has been putting out some great psychedelic electronica for over a decade. Them Frenchies always put out the best electronic artists! Their name is a French acronym for “love, imagination, dream,” and you can hear those ideals manifest themselves sonically in all their works.

Wax Pick: Passion Pit – Manners

This pick is LONG overdue. I keep all these random little things I want to post in open FireFox tabs. I’ve probably got 60 tabs open right now, and this one’s been staring me in the face for the better part of 6 months (and I wonder why my computer lags sometimes…). That said, today, I will close said tab.

Passion pit is a great, and somewhat quirky, electronic group from the east coast. The project actually started when singer Michael Angelakos decided to write a few songs to give his girlfriend on Valentine’s Day.

Their first EP got a lot of play in the UK and in commercials after garnering a small following at Emerson College, where Michael was studying.

Doesn’t that seem like it just came too easy?

Wax Pick: The Big Pink – A Brief History Of Love

The Big Pink is an electro-rock duo from London that just put out their first full length album on 4AD records a few weeks back. I’ve been really digging it, sort of a hybrid of shoegaze rock with electronic undertones.

Members Robbie Furze and Milo Cordell produced the album at Electric Lady in New York. You can catch them stateside towards the end of November and early December. After that, they’ll be supporting Muse on the UK branch of “The Resistance” tour, sure to give them some great exposure to a fanbase likely to love their sound.

If you live in San Diego, there are some plans in the works to have them spin a quick set at M-Theory Records in Hillcrest before their Casbah show on November 21st too, in case you want to check that out.

Anyway, let me know what you think! You can get their album below at Amazon, and your local record shop probably has it stocked too, as 4AD has pretty solid distro.

Versant Covers ABBA’s SOS

I told you to keep your ears out for former Shiny Toy Guns lead Carah Faye, and her new project Versant, earlier this year. Well, it’s looking more like they’ll break in 2010 instead of what little is left of ’09 now, but we’re getting some sweet teasers from them while we wait for an official release.

A few months back, Versant asked for fans to vote on a song that they should cover via an online poll. The winner, perhaps due to Mamma Mia’s hype spike at the time, was ABBA’s SOS.

Here’s a cut of the song amidst some random band footage and a slow-mo Diet Coke chug… random.

Now, does it belong on the sweetest covers ever list?

Daft Punk, Touring, Tron, And The New Lightcycle

Daft Punk has recorded at least 24 new tracks for the upcoming Tron film (now called Tron Legacy, formerly TRON 2, TR2N, etc…). You can read the initial announcement of that here.

You already knew that much.

The big update comes from Comic-Con 2009, where the new Tron Lightcycle was revealed. Listen to the music in the background, it just may well be one of the new Daft Punk tracks cut to appear in the new film.

There are rumors flying around that the french duo will be touring in support of the new material as well, though director Joseph Kosinski simply stated that there would be some Tron-themed events for Daft Punk on the horizon. Whether that’s touring our not is yet to be seen.

And about the Lightcycle: I want one.

Greg Kurstin’s production is brilliant, Inara’s vocals are spot on, and the future-retro music they’ve been cranking out for years is still unmatched by any other. Greg has got to be one of my favorite musicians, I wouldn’t even want to clutter the page with all his credits and accolades, you can find them here. Suffice it to say, he’s got chops.

If you haven’t yet, be sure to pick up their full length, Ray Guns Are Not Just The Future too.

Please Clap Your Hands is an all-too-short 5-song EP from about two years back, featuring “Polite Dance Song” (which you can also find on their full length) and a perfect cover of The Bee Gees “How Deep Is Your Love,” 30 years in the making. If nothing else, buy it to grab the cover, and for the same price, get the rest of the EP!

Wax Pick: Discovery – LP

I first heard Discovery when I came accross “Osaka Loop Line” a month or so back on a friend’s blip.fm page. I’ve left that window open since then in my browser, just waiting for the album to come out today so I could post it as a Wax Pick.

Discovery is a side project from members of Vampire Weekend & Ra Ra Riot. I’m not the biggest fan of either of those two bands, but have really dug the programming in the new group. You’ll hear both bands’ influences coming through loud and clear, especially on their cover of Jackson 5′s “I Want You Back.” Check it out!
