Daft Punk has recorded at least 24 new tracks for the upcoming Tron film (now called Tron Legacy, formerly TRON 2, TR2N, etc…). You can read the initial announcement of that here.

You already knew that much.

The big update comes from Comic-Con 2009, where the new Tron Lightcycle was revealed. Listen to the music in the background, it just may well be one of the new Daft Punk tracks cut to appear in the new film.

There are rumors flying around that the french duo will be touring in support of the new material as well, though director Joseph Kosinski simply stated that there would be some Tron-themed events for Daft Punk on the horizon. Whether that’s touring our not is yet to be seen.

And about the Lightcycle: I want one.

Geek out.

This has more to do with the movie than Arcade Fire, but I still love it and had to share it for its inspiring beauty and awesomeness.

There are certain songs that completely alter the dynamics and drama of a film trailer. It’s good to see that they’re using something other than Sigur Ros’ Hoppipolla to garner drama here. After Children of Men, Penelope, Planet Earth, and most recently Slumdog Millionaire, I think I might have to boycott the next trailer that uses it. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love the song and am happy for our Icelandic friends for breaking the bank with it, it’s just been the go to dramatic piece for the past 4 years and I think it’s time to move on.

Enter “Where The Wild Things Are.”

If “Wake Up” does for Arcade Fire what Hoppipolla did for Sigur Ros, we’ll be hearing a lot more of it.

Yes, that’s billion with a B, and only in North America during the past 15 months reports the NPD Group. MTV, the publisher of the game, has distributed 40 million songs through the RockBand platform since its launch in 2007.

Here’s how it breaks down:

614 songs included on discs and the in-game music store

269 artists represented

40 million paid songs sold

11 albums released to RockBand (AC/DC Live, The Cars, Motley Crue, Foo Fighters, Pixies, Judas Priest, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Megadeth, Rush, No Doubt, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and custom compilations from The Who, Nirvana, The Grateful Dead, Boston)

I’m not surprised at all to see the game succeeding so well, and would even argue that RockBand and Guitar Hero present very unique oportunities for artists to promote thier music in a market in which it’s increasingly tough to cut through the noise.

The entertainment industry is changing. Video games are no kiddie-time joke anymore. Gaming is a big boy industry opperating on the same plane as movies and music; and they deserve the same ammount of respect. One of the most notable differences is that the Video Game industry is on the rise, and music and movies seem to be on the decline with regards to revenue and entertainment marketshare.

Think of some of your favorite bands right now. How did you first hear about them? Yael Naim broke through after scoring her song in the MacBook Air commercial. I first heard Sigur Ros on the Vanilla Sky soundtrack. M.I.A. blew up after landing “Paper Planes” in Pineapple Express. You get the idea. Bands that can push songs on other mediums are able to gain exposure and success in new markets, translating that success into album sales.

Is there an outlet you could be tapping to promote your music? Don’t wait for somebody special to stumble upon your MySpace page; there are 5 billion other bands doing the same thing and that ship has long sailed. Get on Google, look up indie film festivals, independent game developers and conferences, etc. Email them offering your songs to be featured in their films and games. Who knows? One of them might just blow up, carrying your tracks with it.

Daft Punk, the French electronica duo known for their robot personas, have been tapped by Walt Disney Pictures to compose the score for “TR2N”, an update of the studio’s 1982 science fiction classic “Tron”, Billboard has confirmed.

The film, currently in production, is tentatively scheduled for a 2011 release.

The “TR2N” score marks Daft Punk’s first foray into the studio since 2005′s “Human After All.” After an extended hiatus, the duo reemerged in 2007 for an extensive world tour, spawning the Grammy-wining live set “Alive 2007.” The group’s 2001 track “Harder Better Faster Stronger” was adapted by Kanye West for his single “Stronger,” and the pair appeared on the 2008 Grammy Awards with the rapper.

The musicians, Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter split their time between Paris and Los Angeles, where they have have assembled a new recording studio for the TR2N project.

Daft Punk have worked in film before, most notably as directors of their feature “Electroma,” although that film used none of the group’s own music. As Banglater explained to Billboard in 2007 about the pair’s next musical project, “The cool thing is that we’re always trying to do something that hasn’t been done, or ultimately, that we aren’t doing ourselves yet. It is challenging to get back in the studio and work with ideas we haven’t expressed before. Some ideas take time, but some just take a few weeks, so we’ll see.”

The original film, which pioneered the use of computer graphics, was scored by Wendy Carlos, an electronic musician and composer whose “Switched on Bach” album was one of the first to highlight the Moog synthesizer as a musical instrument.

Set against a backdrop of early 60′s London, TELSTAR is the story of the world’s first independent record producer, Joe Meek. A maverick genius who enjoyed phenomenal early success with TELSTAR – the biggest selling record of its time – before bad luck, depression, heartbreak and paranoia forced him into murder and suicide.

A gay, amphetamine addicted, talented but deeply troubled soul, Meek dabbled in the occult. He is already an iconic figure in the world of British pop.

Far from being a maudlin tale, this stranger than fiction true story is a satirical comic drama revealing the many sides of Joe Meek, a man who is now revered as a pioneer in the field of popular music.

I can’t honestly say that the movie looks that great. I haven’t given it a watch yet, so I’ll reserve further judgement until then. I do think it’s cool that they’re bringing light to such a monumental figure in electronic music and production. I remember my first preamp/compressor was a Joe Meek MC2. I had no idea what it did, how it did it, or who this Joe Meek guy was, but I knew that everything sounded a whole lot better when I pumped it through that little green box.
