I know I’m late to the party on Trent Reznor’s new project with wife, Mariqueen Maandig. Pitchfork just posted a full song that you can listen to. If you want to see a couple videos from the studio, mostly short clips to generate some JJ Abrams style hype, check out their site.

All in all, I really dig it. It’s almost like the chill instrumental side of NIN meets Massive Attack.

NIN Backstage Footage

Here’s an interesting clip from backstage at a NIN concert in Sydney, where the power went out halfway through the show. It’s an interesting and candid look at Trent and the guys.

I mostly uploaded this because it was shot with the new Canon 5D mkII, and the video quality is stunning.

NIN To Tour With Jane’s Addiction, Then “Disappear”

Trent Reznor just announced on the NIN site that they would be touring with Jane’s Addiction in 2009, and then taking a hiatus.

In NIN world, 2009 marks the 20th anniversary of our first releases. I’ve been thinking for some time now it’s time to make NIN disappear for a while. Last year’s “Lights in the Sky” tour was something I’m quite proud of and seems like the culmination of what I could pull off in terms of an elaborate production. It was also quite difficult to pull off technically and physically night after night and left us all a bit dazed. After some thought, we decided to book a last run of shows across the globe this year. The approach to these shows is quite different from last year – much more raw, spontaneous and less scripted. Fun for us and a different way for you to see us and wave goodbye. I reached out to Jane’s to see if they’d want to join us across the US and we all felt it could be a great thing. Will it work? Will it resonate in the marketplace? Who knows. Are there big record label marketing dollars to convince you to attend? Nope.
Does it feel right to us and does it seem like it will be fun for us and you? Yes it does.
Look for tour dates soon and I hope to see you out there.

The news comes fresh off the heels of Jane’s secret show last night in LA, previously reported here. It looks like the co-headlining tour will bring about another banner year for NIN in 2009, who shook up the music world last year with an epic Lights In The Sky Tour, two independent digital releases (Ghosts I-IV, and The Slip), and introduced a new paradigm in content distribution by offering free torrent files of albums and video footage directly to fans. Then, book-ending their career with Jane’s Addiction in the beginning and the end, the band will fall silent for an unknown length of time.

NIN’s Free Album Becomes Best Selling of 2008

Nine Inch Nails licensed Ghosts I-IV under Creative Commons, and released it as a free download from their site in 2008. When it was released, I went directly to the NIN site to download it. It took a while due to bandwidth restrictions on their end, and the sheer number of people flocking to their site to get it. Ghosts I-IV was then released for $5 in the Amazon MP3 store, where it was the top selling album of 2008.

Despite the fact that you could download Ghosts for free, 100% legally, from NIN’s site or any P2P network (since it was released under Creative Commons), people still flocked to purchase the album from an online retailer.

I don’t really see this success being mirrored on a smaller scale, as it takes a known artist to move quantity like that. I’ve had friends’ bands on Noise Trade, which gives albums away or lets you pay what you want. They have seen very little return from it. Since their band is unknown to the listener, the listener will download it for free to give it a go, since the only cost is harddrive space. If it were to cost money though, the listener has a heightened risk in forking out even $5 to download an album they may or may not like.

Do you think the NIN model can be successful with smaller bands? Is it truly a marker for the direction the music industry is heading, or simply the direction that NIN is heading?

NIN Releases Lights In The Sky HD Footage For Free Download

The internet is full of surprises these days.
I was contacted by a mysterious, shadowy group of subversives who SOMEHOW managed to film a substantial amount (over 400 GB!) of raw, unedited HD footage from three separate complete shows of our Lights in the Sky tour. Security must have been lacking at these shows because the quality of the footage is excellent.

If any of you could find a LINK to that footage I’ll bet some enterprising fans could assemble something pretty cool.

Oh yeah, you didn’t hear this from me.

Check it out here if you’ve got the harddrive space for it and a fast enough computer to play and edit HD video. Each show is about 125 GB.
