Wax Pick: Mute Math – Armistice

Check out the latest from New Orleans’ finest, a band only 5 or 6 years into their current project that has already garnered Grammy noms and completely defined a genre all their own.

Armistice is definitely a departure from their self-titled full length, and even more so from their Reset EP, but it is just as catchy. The texture of the album as a whole sounds a bit more retro; not the compositions or instrumentation, more just the indescribable ooze that saturates the sonic qualities of every track, giving it a bit of a lo-fi temperament.

Compared to previous releases, Armistice is much more driven by Paul Meany’s vocal, set atop heavily effected and synthesized hooks that lay a simpler bed than in previous albums. It’s a well balanced album with moods that rise and fall to take you on a trip. No more bloviating, just give it a listen:

I think my favorite track might be the title track, Armistice. I love the horn sample, the throwback vibe, and how everything works together to create a picture in my head of an era too long forgotten.

The amazon mp3 album is missing the last track? Unless iTunes just has an extra one. There's one more track called Architecture.

For sure. I've heard mixed reviews to say the least. I think once I realized that their newer stuff wouldn't sound like Reset, I was all good with it. I had to come to grips with the fact that the "Mute Math" sound in my head, isn't really the way the band sounds. Make sense?

All that aside, I dig it.

i love the throwback sounds and a European vibe going on. I think it will grow on me. You think of any of your fav bands and new albums, there was always going to be ups and down. For me, it was U2. When they made "All That You Can't Leave Behind" it was emotional-ish moment for me. It felt like I was back in 1987. You can't manufacture that. You have to wait for it.
